Watchers

Just got back from vacation. Spent much of my down time polishing off a book which reprinted all the 1970's Weird Western Comics starring Jonah Hex. This was my first exposure to that character....loved every frame of every story.
The early issues were penciled and inked by a Filipino comic-book named Tony DeZuniga.  I was only familiar with his late '70's Thor work where he inked over John Buscema and then penciled several issues. I believe he also worked on the black and white, magazine sized, Punisher books from that era as well?
I always liked his work...but...now after seeing his Jonah Hex work...I'm a huge fan.
If you haven't read these issues...find them!
Needless to say...now... I can't wait to see the Jonah Hex movie!

My name is Doug Baron. I am a comic book artist/musician.
Since 1992 I've been publishing a comic book series which is currently called "Jump Back Adventures". It's 64 pages of comedy/adventure featuring two hunchback detectives from New Orleans who call themselves "The Flying Quasimodo Brothers". There's an alien boxer who comes to Earth with intentions of becoming the Heavyweight champ...his name.."Sugar Ray Finhead". And, there are stories about a troublesome alien, cavekid called, "Little Jim-Bob Big Foot".
I also produce cd cover artwork for a company called Firstcom as well as t-shirt designs for www.firststringtshirts.com
You can see examples of all of this work in my gallery section.
On top of all that, I teach numerous cartoon art classes and workshops throughout New Jersey. For fourteen years I've been an instructor at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon & Graphic Art in Dover, New Jersey.
Not only was I lucky enough to once be a student at that school, today, I still get a chance to go back two days a week and work with all the up and coming new talent. I love that place!
Also, I work with younger students at the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, NJ...The Somerset Art Association in Bedminster, Stage Struck Performing Art Center in New Providence, Creative Hands Art Studio in Madison...and numerous libraries throughout the area.
Musically,I've been playing the Dobro Guitar since 1982. Currently I'm in an acoustic rock band out of Fords, NJ called the Holy Smokes. I also record and perform with a singer songwriter out of Little Silver, NJ named Rick Dill.
I hope you enjoy my work.

Doug, it's great to see you're still doing what you do best. I miss Sugar Ray from the classes I took with you and will have to stop by some day a pick up your more recent publications. Some of the art in your gallery is phenomenal, and its all in your unforgettable style. I leave for college in august, so shoot me a list of dates where your back in the old classroom and I'll swing by.

Hope all is well,

A little while ago I was fortunate enough to obtain the full 11-issue run of Sugar Ray Finhead, plus the first four editions of Jump Back Adventures, and I enjoyed all the comics tremendously. I was totally unaware that you had your own place on DA, so stumbling upon your gallery was a splendid surprise!

It's great to see more of your ace arty stuff, and I'll look forward to seeing further additions to your gallery. Keep up the nifty work, and I shall keep my fingers crossed that Ray and co may yet feature in further comics from your good self. Oh, and Happy New Year!

Excellent news. I shall await further developments with keen anticipation!

As to how I discovered the books, it was all thanks to a Google image search. I can't remember now exactly what I was looking for, but a Sugar Ray Finhead cover popped up among the results and caught my attention, as it looked like exactly the sort of gleefully oddball knockabout fun that I love in comics. Investigating further brought up an eBay page, and a couple of transactions later I'd managed to get hold of the whole collection. And the comics were indeed vastly entertaining, so many thanks for putting 'em out into the world!

Oh god, dude! Do you remember me? I'm Cheyenne from your art class like forever ago! I miss those actually. Eek. Well, just wanted to drop by and say hello! Also, I need to return your copy of Nightmare Before Christmas eventually because I recently found it again. Sorry 'bout that.
